Bloomsburg Posts Win over IUP in Field Hockey
SHIPPENSBURG —Ashley Heckard (Millerstown/Greenwood) scored three times to lead the Bloomsburg University field hockey team to a 5-3 win over Indiana (PA) in the semi finals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Field Hockey playoffs. The game was played at Shippensburg University due to the heavy rains in the area the last few days.
The Huskies, 17-3, will now face the winner of the Shippensburg-Kutztown on Saturday for the PSAC championship.
The Huskies got on the board 12 minutes into play when Venssa Witman (Oley/Oley Valley) scored on a penalty stroke, then went ahead 2-0 when Heckard scored off a Kelly Trevisan (Lancaster/Manheim Twp) assist eight minutes later.
IUP cut the deficit in half when Kandice Pyles scored unassisted at the 25 minute mark. Then senior All-American Kristi Ney (Dauphin/C.D. East) put the Huskies back in front by two goals, 3-1, when she scored unassisted with less than five minutes to go in the first half of play.
In the second half of action, IUP again made it a one-goal game when Carly McLendon scored off a Liz Marosky assist. Less than five minutes later Heckard scored again to make it a 4-2 game in favor of Bloomsburg.
IUP cut the margin back to a goal, 4-3, with less than four minutes to play in the game when Suzanne Cornelissen scored unassisted for the Indians.
However, Heckard would ice the game for the Huskies with a goal at the 67 minute mark off a Jamie Vanartsdalen (Philadelphia/Lower Moreland) assist.
The Huskies will be aiming for their fourth straight PSAC title on Saturday.
